Halkidiki to Naxos: The Joy of Slow Travel

When planning a trip to the Greek islands, it's tempting to look for the quickest flight and get there as fast as possible. But Zoe and her daughter chose a different approach. Travelling from the lush peninsula of Halkidiki to the Cycladic island of Naxos wasn't simply about getting from A to B – it became an unforgettable part of their holiday.

Their adventure began by leaving behind Halkidiki's pine-covered coastline and crystal-clear waters for the journey south to Athens by coach. As the scenery changed, so did their appreciation of Greece. Rolling hills, fertile plains, traditional villages and roadside tavernas reminded them that there's far more to the country than its postcard-perfect islands.

Reaching the busy port of Piraeus signalled the stage of the trip. Ferries have connected mainland Greece with the islands for generations, and boarding one feels like stepping into a tradition that's still very much part of everyday Greek life. Alongside holidaymakers were locals returning home, families visiting relatives and workers commuting between islands.

The moment the ferry pulled away from the harbour, everything slowed down. The Athens skyline gradually disappeared behind them, replaced by the endless blue of the Aegean. Instead of airport queues and departure gates, there was time to enjoy a coffee on deck, watch seabirds glide effortlessly alongside the ship and simply enjoy the peaceful rhythm of travelling by sea.

One of the joys of ferry travel is watching the islands appear one by one. Depending on the route, places like Paros emerge on the horizon before the ferry continues towards Naxos. Every stop offers a snapshot of island life, with fishing boats in the harbour, bustling waterfront cafés and whitewashed villages climbing the surrounding hillsides.

It's easy to see why slow travel has become so popular. While taking the ferry can be a more sustainable choice than flying, the real reward is having time to appreciate the journey itself. Rather than rushing from one destination to the next, you experience the changing landscapes, meet fellow travellers and see Greece unfold exactly as generations of travellers have before.

Then comes the moment everyone waits for. As Naxos comes into view, the iconic Portara dominates the skyline, standing proudly above the harbour. Arriving by sea makes the first glimpse of this ancient marble gateway feel even more special—an experience that simply can't be replicated from an airport transfer.

For Zoe and her daughter, travelling from Halkidiki to Naxos proved that sometimes the journey really is part of the destination. Slowing down allowed them to discover two very different sides of Greece while creating memories that began long before they reached the island.
