Why the French Alps are amazing in Summer!
When we think of the French Alps, we usually picture snow, ski lifts and cosy winter chalets. But this month, Zoe and her family discovered a very different side of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc – one of sunshine, mountain walks, wildflower-filled meadows, adventure and long lunches with spectacular views.
Swap ski boots for walking shoes and the French Alps become an incredible summer playground.
A Natural Playground
Surrounded by towering peaks, forests and alpine meadows, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is made for getting outside. There are gentle walking trails for families, picnic spots with unforgettable views and mountain paths to explore at your own pace. Older children can take things up a notch with mountain biking, climbing and adventure parks, while cable cars and mountain railways make it easy to get higher without having to hike every metre.
And sometimes, the best plan is no plan at all – simply follow a trail, stop for an ice cream or find somewhere beautiful to sit and take it all in.
You don’t have to fly
One of the things we particularly loved about a summer trip to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is that you can get there without flying. Travel by train through France, or make it part of a European road trip and drive. Yes, the journey takes longer, but there’s something rather lovely about watching the landscape change from cities and countryside to vineyards and, finally, the Alps.
The journey becomes part of the holiday rather than something to endure before it begins. And once you arrive, you can leave the car behind. Excellent public transport, mountain railways, cable cars and walking routes make it easy to explore without relying heavily on a car.
It’s a simple way to travel more responsibly, support local communities and experience the destination at a slower pace.
More Than Just Mountains
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc itself is every bit as appealing as the scenery surrounding it. This charming alpine town is full of cafés, local restaurants, markets and boutiques – perfect for wandering around after a morning in the mountains. Think lunch with a view of Mont Blanc, an afternoon exploring the town and an ice cream with the family before dinner.
It’s that wonderful combination of adventure outside and French mountain life in town that makes Chamonix-Mont-Blanc so special.
Why summer?
The French Alps in summer offer something wonderfully different. There’s the drama of the mountains without the cold, the freedom to explore without skis, and plenty of time to slow down and enjoy being together.
For Zoe and her family, it was a chance to experience Chamonix-Mont-Blanc not as a winter ski destination, but as a place to walk, explore, eat, relax and reconnect with nature.
And perhaps that’s the real magic of the summer Alps. You don’t need snow to make the mountains unforgettable.
