Is Crete a good holiday destination for families?
If your family is still pondering where to go this summer, Crete could very well be the answer.
Back in April, Travel Advisor Jacky travelled across the island’s north coast, staying in six very different hotels to experience exactly what Crete offers families, couples and multi-generational travellers before the busy summer season arrived. From luxury beachfront resorts and wellness retreats to laid-back coastal stays and elegant family-friendly escapes, her journey revealed why Crete remains one of the Mediterranean’s most rewarding destinations.
What stood out most throughout her trip was how easy Crete feels for families. The island moves at a gentler pace than many summer hotspots, locals are incredibly welcoming to children, and there’s a natural mix of relaxation and adventure that suits every age group. One day can be spent beside a calm turquoise bay, the next exploring mountain roads, discovering hidden villages or enjoying fresh local food in family-run tavernas.
Agios Nikolaos: relaxed luxury with everything close by
Jacky began her journey in Agios Nikolaos, one of Crete’s prettiest coastal towns, where waterfront cafés, boutique shopping and relaxed harbour life create an easy rhythm for families and couples alike.
Her first stay was at Niko Seaside MGallery, a stylish adults-focused hotel with panoramic sea views and a beautifully relaxed atmosphere. The rooftop pool quickly became a favourite spot, while sea-facing rooms with private plunge pools added an extra sense of luxury for a spring escape. One of the hotel’s biggest strengths is its location, allowing guests to walk easily into town for dinner, shopping or an evening stroll along the waterfront.
Next door, InterContinental Crete by IHG offered a different style of luxury, blending modern resort comforts with a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Built into the cliffside, the hotel incorporates natural rock into its design, giving it a real sense of place. With spacious sea-view rooms, rooftop pools, a spa and easy access to town, Jacky felt it worked especially well for couples or families with older children wanting both relaxation and flexibility.
Exploring the slower side of Crete
While based around Agios Nikolaos, Jacky spent time discovering the surrounding region at a slower pace. She visited the postcard-perfect village of Plaka, wandered through local shops selling handmade ceramics and olive wood products, and took a boat trip to the historic island of Spinalonga.
A highlight was visiting the Vassilakis Estate, where she learned more about traditional olive oil production and the sustainable farming practices that remain central to Cretan life. Driving through the island’s hills and villages afterwards, she described Crete as a destination best enjoyed slowly, leaving room for spontaneous stops and simple moments along the way.
Minos Beach Art Hotel: barefoot luxury with soul
After three nights, Jacky moved to Minos Beach Art Hotel, where she said the pace of the trip softened instantly. Stretching quietly along nearly two kilometres of coastline, the hotel blends naturally into its surroundings with low-rise bungalows hidden among gardens and beside the sea.
She particularly loved the property’s understated elegance, sculpture garden and focus on sustainability and local sourcing. Breakfast celebrated seasonal Cretan produce rather than oversized buffets, while complimentary bikes encouraged guests to explore nearby Agios Nikolaos at a leisurely pace.
Although children are welcome, the atmosphere remains calm and peaceful rather than heavily activity-led, making it ideal for families seeking a slower, more nature-focused holiday.
Minos Palace: wellness and total calm
She also visited nearby Minos Palace, an adults-only retreat with a strong wellness focus. Located on its own peninsula, every room faces the sea, creating an immediate sense of calm and space.
What impressed her most was the hotel’s holistic approach to wellbeing. Rather than focusing solely on spa treatments, the experience centres around thoughtful nutrition, restorative experiences, local ingredients and a slower rhythm that feels deeply connected to Crete itself.
Nana Princess: luxury with family flexibility
Travelling west towards Malia, Jacky checked into Nana Princess, one of the most luxurious stays of the trip. Spacious villas and suites feature private pools, oversized terraces and high-tech comforts, while some even include private spa and gym areas.
The beachfront stood out as one of the best she experienced anywhere in Europe, with exceptional service and beautifully comfortable loungers. Sunset drinks at the rooftop bar quickly became a nightly ritual.
What makes Nana Princess particularly appealing for families, however, is its connection to neighbouring Nana Golden Beach. Guests can easily access waterparks, children’s activities, sports facilities and family entertainment, allowing parents to enjoy a more peaceful luxury setting while still keeping younger travellers entertained nearby.
Amirandes: polished family luxury near Heraklion
For her final night, Jacky stayed at Amirandes by Grecotel, conveniently located close to Heraklion Airport. Inspired by Minoan architecture, the resort combines lagoons, gardens and spacious resort facilities while still managing to feel surprisingly relaxed.
This is an excellent choice for multi-generational travel or families wanting everything organised in one place. There’s a long private beach, excellent children’s facilities, varied dining and plenty of space for both activity and relaxation.
One standout experience was dining in the hotel’s traditional Cretan restaurant, which delivered one of the most memorable meals of the entire trip and reinforced the island’s strong connection to local food and culture.
Why Crete works so well for families
Throughout the journey, one thing became increasingly clear to Jacky: Crete is one of those rare destinations that genuinely works for everyone.
Parents can enjoy beautiful hotels, excellent food and slower travel, while children have space to explore beaches, villages and outdoor adventures without everything feeling overly structured. The island combines luxury and authenticity effortlessly, allowing families to reconnect while still experiencing the real Crete beyond the resorts.
For families looking for sunshine, authenticity, comfort and meaningful quality time together this summer, Jacky’s conclusion was simple: Crete delivers all of it beautifully.
