The Travel Foundation's project has helped beach operators understand how to approach tourists and organise them into a rotation scheme to minimise hasstle.
Lace Making Centre
The Travel Foundation's lace making centre Dickwella, near Galle, offers visitors the chance to buy authentic crafts to take home as gifts or souvenirs. A visit to the centre includes demonstrations of traditional lace making and the lace making museum.
The Travel Foundation has trained young unemployed women in traditional Beeralu Bobbin lace making and this is creating beautiful gifts for tourists to purchase, as well as providing an income for families in need.
Trees For Life Excursion
You can visit The Travel Foundation tree nursery near Galle and donate a tree to a rehoused family or help revegetate the Hiyare rainforest post-tsunami. Many people lost their homes during the disaster and these trees offer medicinal, economic and culinary value to the affected families. You can also take a boat trip and follow a nature trail to experience the beauty of the rainforest first hand.
This project is to raise awareness of the importance of trees to school children and local communities, helping protect the natural environment into the future.
