The Western Algarve

A new day dawns in the Western Algarve. The early morning mist clears, revealing a beautiful green and ochre land. The wild flowers open to catch the sun. A farmer guides his mule cart to market. Down at the shore, the fishermen check their nets after bringing home the night’s catch.

The new day brings new opportunities. You can simply relax on the beach. Choose from among the many sheltered sandy coves along the south coast, or venture a little further to one of the more dramatic west coast beaches, open to the full grandeur of the Atlantic swell.

Situated within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, these beaches are among the most beautiful and least crowded in Europe. The park protects one hundred and fifty kilometres of unspoilt coastline. Explore the cliffs and ravines, roam free among sand dunes and heath lands, and discover a hidden wealth of flora and fauna.

As midday approaches, cooling Atlantic air currents provide a welcome counterpoint to the summer heat. Time to enjoy a game of tennis or a round of golf. Or take out a sport fishing boat from Lagos’ award-winning marina.

Colourful Lagos, the launching point for Portugal’s epic voyages of discovery, has been a local centre of commerce since medieval times. The markets display a wide variety of fresh produce.

The pavement restaurants serve locally caught seafood at surprisingly reasonable prices. In the evening, the narrow cobbled lanes come alive with people watching the street performers and thronging the bars that stay open until late. And at night, the way home is illuminated by the stars that shine so brightly in the crystal clear air.

Here, under the direction of an award-winning, environmental architect, the Elixir Group is creating a unique new development – AlmaVerde Village & Spa.
