Set
in eight hectares of landscaped parkland, AlmaVerde Spa is
at the heart of a complex of amenities designed to meet the
year-round health, fitness and leisure needs of both residents
and guests. AlmaVerde is planned as a low density community,
with only ten percent of the total area designated for building.

With
the benefit of many years of successful low energy design
experience, the team has developed a new building specification
tailored to local climatic conditions. Building materials
and systems have been carefully selected and combined for
their thermal and insulating properties, as well as for their
beauty, durability and cost. Specification options include
natural, renewable materials such as cork for insulation and
adobe for thermal mass. Contributing to this effort is The
Coolhouse Project, an EU-funded partnership of environmental
engineers and architects working to develop low energy alternatives
to domestic air conditioning.

A
keynote of this design is the dramatic double-height entrance
hall, with stairway leading to the large roof terrace. The
L-shaped open-plan reception area has distinct living and
dining spaces, with the option of making the kitchen a separate
room. Accessed from the living area, the study or family room
can also be used as an occasional bedroom. The two principal
bedrooms both have their own en-suite facilities, while the
third double bedroom is next to the shared shower room. Patio
doors lead from the living area to the outside terrace, pool
and garden areas.
